2023 NFL head coach tracker: Cardinals fire Kliff Kingsbury; Texans sack Lovie Smith

The 2023 NFL training cycle is already well underway. Several teams haven’t bothered to wait until the start of the offseason to get a head start on their next search, but others are now joining the fray with the regular season on the books. The Texans kicked off the next wave of changes Sunday night, firing Lovie Smith nearly a year after firing David Culley, who also only lasted one season as team leader. And after? And which big names could soon be hired as replacements?

Stay tuned here throughout the start of the offseason for updates on the coaches who have been dispatched:

Cardinals fire Kliff Kingsbury

Date: January 9 | Seasons: 4 | Save: 28-37-1

Four years after arriving alongside No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray, Kingsbury is set to cap off the worst season of his mercurial tenure at Arizona. Despite the team improving on paper in his second and third seasons in charge, the former Texas Tech coach managed just one playoff appearance while overseeing four consecutive declines. at the end of the year. An aging, injury-riddled roster didn’t necessarily help, nor did a battered and erratic Murray, but Kingsbury’s attack too often lacked pace to remain relevant. This year’s 4-13 campaign sealed the deal, and now Arizona will likely look to hire another offensive mind capable of rejuvenating Murray after the QB signed a lucrative extension last offseason.

Texans fire Lovie Smith

Date: January 8 | Seasons: 1 | Save: 3-13-1

Nearly a calendar year after firing David Culley just a season into his tenure as head coach, the Texans followed suit with Smith, 64, firing the coach just hours after guiding Houston to a week 18 upset by the Colts. Originally hired as Culley’s defensive coordinator in 2021, Smith was promoted to the top job after a lengthy interview process last offseason, and went 3-13-1 on the job. He said ahead of Sunday’s regular season finale that he plans to return in 2023 and has led the Texans to two wins in their last three games, but also gave up the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft. Despite guiding a competitive defense for much of the year, Smith has never raised an understrength offense and hasn’t posted a winning record since 2012.
