Ahmedabad/ New Delhi, January 9
In a sudden development, the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which markets its products under the “Amul” brand, ousted its longtime managing director, RS Sodhi, on Monday, but gave no reason.
However, Sodhi said he asked the federation board to relieve him of his duties.
The federation’s Chief Operating Officer, Jayenbhai Mehta, has been appointed acting Managing Director (MD).
Sodhi, who has been associated with the federation for more than four decades, filed his papers shortly after the board asked him to drop the charge.
Although the reason for the sudden move could not be immediately determined, Sodhi said he was in overtime and asked the board to release him from the MD’s responsibility.
At the federation board meeting held on Monday at the premises of AmulFed Dairy in Gandhinagar, it was decided to terminate Sodhi’s services.
“In accordance with Board Resolution No. 2, it has been proposed that your service as CEO of the federation be terminated with immediate effect. Thus, you are hereby requested to relinquish your office as CEO with immediate effect and hand it over to the COO of the federation, Jayenbhai Mehta,” according to a communication sent by the council to Sodhi.
The communication was signed by Federation President Shamalbhai Patel and Vice President Valamjibhai Humbal.
Sodhi said he was “very pleased” with the federation’s decision and refuted reports suggesting he had been “sacked” and his office “sealed”.
“My term as a doctor ended two years ago and I was on extension. I had asked the board to relieve me of this responsibility. The board had told me to wait a while saying that they would relieve me once they find a suitable replacement,” Sodhi told reporters.
“When I again asked the GCMMF Board to relieve me, they finally accepted my request and relieved me today. It was my own decision to step down and I am very happy today “, did he declare.
When Sodhi took over as MD, the federation’s turnover was only Rs 9,774 crore in the financial year 2010-11. It fetched Rs 61,000 crore in the financial year 2021-22.
Sodhi, who has worked with the federation for over 40 years, served as general manager for 12 years.
He was first appointed MD in 2010 for five years. In 2015, he was reappointed in the same position until 2020. Since then, he has been in extra time.
Sodhi did his MBA from Anand Institute of Rural Management (IRMA) and started his career as a manager with the federation.
