Freedom Caucus bill takes billions from UN to finish US border wall

A handful of House Republicans tabled legislation this week that would freeze funding for the United Nations for the next two years and use that money to complete work on a wall on the southwestern United States border.

Rep. Bob Good, R-Va.’s Close Biden’s Open Border Act would raise about $22 billion for the border wall, with the U.S. government donating about $11 billion a year to the UN.

Good said the redirection of UN money made sense because of previous reports that the UN was funding non-profit groups in Mexico to help migrants cross that country to the southern border of the United States. United States. A report last year from the Center for Immigration Studies, for example, said these UN-funded groups entice migrants to talk about government persecution in their home countries, with the aim of help them obtain asylum in the United States.

A statement from Good’s office on the bill quotes Rosemary Jenks of NumbersUSA, who said the UN is “actively assisting and abetting the influx of illegal aliens at the US border.”

“If the UN insists on using its funds to destabilize the integrity of our borders, it is entirely reasonable that we use our share of UN contributions for our own border security,” Jenks said.

President Biden visited the border over the weekend, but Good said Biden had worked to reverse the Trump administration’s tough border policies, including the push to build a physical barrier to deter illegal entry. He said Border Patrol agents supported the wall and that Biden ignored that good advice.
